Consumer Law Issues: Wedding Venue Cancelled Our Contract with Less then Six Months Till Our Wedding

My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: Virginia
We started looking at our wedding venue back in November 2016, and we finally signed the contract and gave our deposit on March 9th 2017.
This venue is a historic hotel which is being restored and was supposed to be opening on April of 2016, but ran into some structural problems and changed the opening to April 2017!
When we toured the hotel back in January 2017 we were told numerous times that we had nothing to worry about, that the hotel would be finished, and having the grand opening in April. Because this was exactly what we were looking for and they were so sure about everything we decided to sign, but not before adding a clause to the contract where if the hotel was for whatever reason not finished in time, we would get all of our deposit back, they agreed to those terms so we proceeded. It was Probably May when we got a call telling us that some problems had come up and the hotel would not be ready in time for our wedding reception! But then the next day we got another call telling us that the issues had been fixed, that they couldn't go into specifics but that they were able to take care of them! We asked if they were 100% sure this time that the hotel would be ready in time? They knew that our date was extremely important for us and we had waited almost 2yrs just to be able to get married on this date (our 10yr anniversary) and also that we had a lot of family flying in from both out of state, and out of the country. So by now plane tickets and Visas had been processed and paid for! They assured us once more, not to worry, that they would be open by late September because they had an event in October, and also a wedding the same date as ours in November. It was about a month ago that I get yet another call from them, to tell me that; "Due to some unforeseen circumstance, they would not be able to be open in time to host my wedding reception!" In fact they would not be opening until sometime next year!! We live in Richmond, and the venue was in Virginia Beach, so logically we chose a church near the venue to have our ceremony. By losing the reception venue we would have to change churches as well since there's no other venue in VA Beach that would go with our wedding theme. This has put a huge amount of stress on my family and I, we were able to find a venue in Richmond, but because we're so close to the date it cost us almost $6000 more!! We are still trying to find a church, because we are Catholics, the Catholic church requires 6 months of preparation and we don't have that much time. The only Catholic church that is able to help us costs $1050 more then the one where we were going to get married! I have talked to the hotel to see if they can help us out with what is going to be almost a $10,000 overage because of what they have done, and all they told me was that they are very sorry and they sympathies with me, but there's nothing they can do except return us our deposit!!! Everyone I have told this story too has told me that they should compensate us for at least something, considering they have pretty much ruined our wedding!!! Do I have grounds for anything? Please help!!!
