Parking Violations: Parking in a Reserved Handicapped Parking Spot

My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: Baltimore, Maryland.

Hello,
A month ago I parked in a handicapped parking spot on my block. I have a legal placard registered to my car. When I went to my car the next morning I see a $502 parking ticket on my window. I called about it thinking the cop must of not seen my placard and figured it would be fine, that was not the case. I am in violation of article 31 violations 26. The parking spot was a personal parking spot and it's only legal to park there with a certain permit number.

I am not from Baltimore and had no idea this was even an option. So I am in the wrong since I parked without the proper permit but honestly had no idea about this law and would of never parked there if I had known. I am taking this to court since I don't have $502 to pay for a parking ticket. I have never been to court before and I'm confused as to how to approach this situation. I'm hoping the officer doesn't show up but since this is a pretty big parking offense I assume he will show.

Thanks for your time.
